I’ll use any excuse to make an obscure Get Smart reference, but this time I barely even have to work for it! Some very smart <s>agents</s> designers have conceptualised* the Cones of Silence for the 21st century, the Veasyble!

Based around the notions of
isolation, intimacy and ornament, the origami-esque accessories are not
only beautiful objects, but an interesting slice of social commentary
to boot. Created from polyethylene, paper and fabric, the various scales cater for different forms of privacy and intimacy.

Designed by Gloria Pizzilli, Arianna Petrakis, Ilaria Pacini and Adele Bacci, there are four seperate accessories that aim to give a little bit of peace in world overrun by KAOS…err, I mean, chaos.

In the words of the designers:

An ornament that can be worn.
A gesture to transform it.
A secret place for personal intimacy.
A reminder of our exterior aspect.

Ever wonder where all those moving boxes go once you leave them by the dumpster? Created by Taiwanese designer, Chishen Shiu, the “Flexible Love” love seat is made of cardboard and can be drawn out like an accordion. Shiu stumbled upon a small factory producing ‘honeycombed’ sheets of recycled paper in suburban Taipei one day.

It’s flexibility allows the piece to transform from a small package that can be easily stored under the bed into a chair or bench seat fitting up 8 people or the extended version which seats 16. It comes in one color – cardboard brown. No longer do you have to store all those foldable chairs for unexpected or even expected visitors. Best of all, it’s entirely environmentally friendly, made from 100% recycled material. As they say fashion forward and environmentally smart.

Michael Straczynski will take over writing both the monthly Superman and Wonder Woman series later this year, aiming to return the icons to their rightful places at the top.

Straczynski, who’s been with DC Comics since finishing up a long (and occasionally controversial) run on Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man in 2008, has never hidden his desire to write the Man of Steel, and he plans to live up to the opportunity:

When I first came over to DC, that dream was realized in part by [then executive editor, now co-publisher] Dan DiDio’s gracious invitation to write the first of potentially many Superman original graphic novels. Now the dream has come fully true with the opportunity to write for the mainstream title, in a story that returns Superman to his roots in a way that will have the whole country talking about him in ways that we haven’t seen in a long time.

He plans a similarly attention-grabbing approach for Wonder Woman:

She’s a vital, powerful character, and we hope to bring a more contemporary sensibility to her character will retaining everything that makes her unique.

As part of its latest financial results report today, Take-Two delayed Red Dead Redemption by several weeks. Previously scheduled to arrive on April 27, the game is now slated to release in North America on May 18 and internationally on May 21. The announcement doesn’t specify a reason for the move, though it’s worth pointing out that the new date moves Red Dead Redemption out of the publisher’s fiscal Q2 (February-April) and into its third quarter (beginning May 1). [Update: During an investor call corresponding with the financial report, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick clarified that the delay was issued to extend the game's pre-release marketing period.]

Take-Two also notes that financial guidance for its fiscal 2010 has been adjusted to take the date change into account. While Read Dead Redemption was at the center of a controversy concerning developer Rockstar San Diego, a barrage of recent media assets and confirmation of retail pre-order bonuses seems to indicate that development is on track.

Her timeline covers crysknives, lightsabers, proton packs, and everything in between.

From Richard Grayson’s catalogue essay published by Annely Juda Fine Art:

In A Timeline of Science Fiction Inventions: Weapons, Warfare and Security Treister has drawn up a history documenting innovations of imaginary and fantastic military technology. These include the ‘Raytron Apparatus’, a form of aerial surveillance, which was described in ‘Beyond the Stars’ by Ray Cummings in 1928, or the ‘Control Helmet’, from ‘Easy Money’ by Edward Hamilton in 1934. The timeline starts in 1726 with the ‘Knowledge Engine’ in Gulliver’s travels and carries on up to the present day. It allows us to see the meetings of worlds as these weapons sometimes travel from the fantastic to manifest themselves into the real, like the ‘Atomic Bomb’ described in ‘The Crack of Doom’ by Robert Cromie in 1895. The format in which she organises this information is the schema of the connected circles of the tree of life or the Sephirot, from the Jewish mystical traditions of the Kabbalah, a representation of linkages between the worlds above and the physical world below and which map stages of transformation between these realms.

Along with your average scifi armaments, Treister also includes such security and defense innovations as the Invisible Man’s invisibility and Orwellian Doublethink. A Timeline of Science Fiction Inventions: Weapons, Warfare and Security can be seen at the Documentalist exhibit at Edinburgh’s Collective Gallery until March 28.

During the last two days we have had something we haven’t seen in a while. No, I am not talking about highs near 60F…although that is true. What we have had is a very large diurnal (daily) range of temperature. Look at the plot above at Sea Tac, today the high was 59 with a low of 39F, a 20F temperature range….far greater than we have had since December. Many locations got colder than that and frost graced many a car this am.

Why so large a range? Most important have been clear skies and our strengthening sun. You feel the warmth? Remember the sun right now is as strong as in mid October, with much longer days than two months ago. And the clear skies associated with high pressure aloft allow maximum heating during the day and maximum cooling at night as the earth radiates infrared energy to space.

But why no clouds and fog…which often occur in midwinter? The secret is that we have a modest east-west pressure difference (higher pressure to the east), which is producing easterly flow across and down the western Cascade slopes. Such downslope air produces drying and warming. Check out the latest profiler data from north Seattle…you can see the easterly flow.

But too much easterly flow would cause warming due to compression and keep our temperatures up at night. But fortunately for diurnal temperature range lovers the easterly flow is strong enough to keep us clear, but not strong enough to cause too much warming.

These conditions will continue through the weekend…warm enough for tee shirts during the day, but cold enough for frost in the morning at many locations.

Today’s Contest: WHO HAS THE LARGEST DIURNAL RANGE?

PSS: There is an article in the Seattle Times today (Saturday) on the early spring.

iPhone developer Jonathan “Schwa” Wight offers a great little trick for creating pixel perfect glassy buttons: using the unofficial UIGlassButton class in the simulator to build your art. In his code paste, he shows how to build a button and render it to a PNG, which you can then save to your desktop.

It’s a great little trick, and one worth adding to your development arsenal. Be aware that UIGlassButton is a private class, and one that has long since been relegated away from the official SDK development path. Although it continues to work on the Simulator, it’s not for use on the iPhone itself or in App Store projects.

Continue reading on to find the code. Don’t forget to substitute your own user folder into the code (in my case, “ericasadun”) for Jonathan’s (“schwa”).

// Code to create a "Glass" button and render it to a png on your desktop.
// Run this from the SIMULATOR and change my username to yours.
// Update: This uses a private iPhone SDK. Do not use this code in your shipping app.
// Use it merely to generate the PNG file for you to use in a fake button.

Class theClass = NSClassFromString(@"UIGlassButton");
UIButton *theButton = [[[theClass alloc] initWithFrame:
CGRectMake(10, 10, 120, 44)] autorelease];
[theButton setValue:[UIColor colorWithHue:0.267
saturation:1.000 brightness:0.667 alpha:1.000]
forKey:@"tintColor"];
[self.view addSubview:theButton];

UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(theButton.frame.size);

CGContextRef theContext = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext();
[theButton.layer renderInContext:theContext];
UIImage *theImage = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext();
NSData *theData = UIImagePNGRepresentation(theImage);
[theData writeToFile:@"/Users/schwa/Desktop/test.png" atomically:NO];

UIGraphicsEndImageContext();

Nice, NPR’s Radiolab did a piece featuring an excerpt from the famous Voyager Golden Record that was placed aboard 1977’s twin Voyager Space Probes. Alongside some simple instructions showing how to construct a device to play it, the record contained recordings of greetings in 50 languages, music, human heartbeats, and a lot more. The link is to an extremely sweet feature on Morning Edition about Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan falling in love during the process of creating the record for NASA. There’s video and an excerpt there too.

I was very moved by the story of how Carl and Ann fell in love, especially at the end where you find her brain waves were recorded while she meditated on being in love, and sent along on the Golden Record. I’ve always been totally in awe of Carl Sagan, since I was a small child in Dallas watching COSMOS as a kid on our local PBS station. He was my first exposure to any kind of popularizing of science and he became the very symbol of that curiosity and wonder and awe that only science can bring to you. He and maybe Stephen Jay Gould, with Neil deGrasse Tyson a good recent example, set the standard for bringing science to the layman. And of course then there are the rest of his many achievements, including a killer movie.

So I will always hold memories of him dearly, what an awesome guy.

There’s a complete schedule of the lectures here, and all lectures are free and open to the public. The first lecture is this Thursday night, from awesome cultural critic Steven Shaviro. He’ll be talking about recent movie Gamer and “the control society.”

To the dismay of many, Mint sold to Intuit in September 2009 for $170 million. I say dismay because many users of Quicken products had been less than thrilled with Intuit’s offerings for some time, and some people were concerned what a twenty-year-old company that seemed stuck in its ways would do with a popular user-friendly Web 2.0 startup.

Out of all the negative press, perhaps Mac users could be forgiven for having the most anxiety over the acquisition. Many had abandoned Quicken Mac 2007 in favor of Mint.com. Mac users wanted to move on from the stale Quicken ecosystem and go with something simple and easy. Now, that simple and easy solution had moved to where the users had escaped from.

Luckily, Intuit wasn’t like other companies who buy smaller start-ups just to eliminate a competitor. Intuit recognized that Patzer and his team possessed the much-needed original financial software ideas and UI design mojo to put a spark in their aging products. In November 2009, Intuit made Aaron Patzer VP/GM of Intuit’s Personal Finance Group — which left him in charge of Intuit’s personal finance offerings, including Quicken for Mac.
It was January 2008. At Macworld Expo, Steve Jobs had just unveiled the MacBook Air. Over at Intuit’s booth, the company was previewing an anticipated update to Quicken Mac 2007 – one that didn’t require Rosetta to run and didn’t have an un-Mac-like UI. Unfortunately, the UI that Quicken ended up with consisted of a Cover Flow-esque interface. It was 2008 after all, and Cover Flow was the hot new UI element, but this was a finance app. We didn’t need glitz when we just wanted to see how much cash we had in the bank. That aside, the single-window interface was a welcome change. Intuit announced that Quicken Mac 2007’s sequel, Quicken Financial Life for Mac, would ship in the Fall of 2008.

Fall 2008 came and went. At Macworld Expo 2009, Intuit previewed a new beta of Quicken Financial Life for Mac and delayed its release again until Fall 2009. I was an early tester of the new beta, and it was buggy; the user interface looked friendlier than it actually was – in other words, the beta was everything you had come to expect from an Intuit product for the Mac. July 2009 came around and, no surprise, Intuit announced it was delaying Quicken Financial Life again, this time until 2010. 2010 – four years after the last version of Quicken for Mac came out (2007 was released in 2006). This time Intuit released a statement all but admitting that the company had failed at providing the Mac with usable financial software:

Feedback from Mac customers led us to rethink our approach to developing Quicken for Mac. We went back to the drawing board and are making changes to everything from what the program does to how it looks. We spent extra time building a reconcile mode for the new register, a robust Windows-to-Mac transfer function for new Mac users (and existing customers running Quicken on a Windows virtual machine), and redesigned the experience to make it look and feel like a native Mac application should.

At the same time, Intuit announced Quicken Financial Life for Mac would be available for pre-order from Intuit’s site on October 12, 2009. Guess what happened? That’s right. But at least this delay was only two months. By the time the product actually did go live with pre-orders many, including myself, thought it was too little, too late.

Luckily though, something happened at Intuit between the pre-order delay in October and the December pre-order release: Aaron Patzer was put in charge of Quicken Essentials for Mac (they scrapped the Quicken Financial Life name for a reason I’ll get to in a moment).

I interviewed Aaron by phone yesterday and he had a lot of things to say about the frustration Mac users have with Intuit. Perhaps that’s because he experienced the same frustration with Quicken – and that frustration led him to found Mint.com. Speaking with Aaron, I could hear the passion in his voice for simple products that allow users to easily access their data in a straightforward way.

Those original ideas and UI design mojo I mentioned earlier? Aaron put them to work right away. “When I first saw Quicken Financial Life, it had Cover Flow for no reason,” he laughed. Cover Flow? No reason? Gone. “Quicken for Mac 2006 and 2007 were C/C++ programs that looked like bastardized versions of the Windows product. Little things matter,” he told me. “In the old apps you would think you were supposed to press Command-A to select all of the entries in your registry, because that’s what Command-A does on a Mac – it selects all. But in Quicken Mac 2007 it would actually bring up your accounts list. It’s little things like that, that you could tell the people [writing the program] weren’t real Mac aficionados.”

Aaron himself uses a 15″ MacBook Pro. The team that he spearheads for Quicken Essentials is a group of “Mac guys who live and breathe this stuff.” The team consists of “five or six developers and three guys on QA with product managers coming on and off and the graphics guys switching between the Windows and Mac versions.”

Speaking of Quicken on Windows, Aaron himself wrote the spec for the next version of Quicken for Windows (2011, due out later this year). Why is that important? Because Aaron has a clearly defined vision of what the future of financial software will look like. “You’ll start to see the mess of all the [Intuit] products merged together. Longer term it shouldn’t matter where you use your financial application, whether it’s on the Mac, Windows, or Linux. I want to get everything to parity [on] the features and actually do the back-end so it’s all a consistent single data model – probably based on Mint – and then just skin the front ends (applications) to look like a Mac product, to look like a Windows product, to look like an iPhone or an Android app – to take advantage of the unique advantages of those platforms. But the back-end would be the same so you can just migrate any time you want to from Mint.com to Quicken Essentials for Mac to your Android phone or iPhone.”

Well, that sounds awesome, but what about people that have years worth of old Quicken data? “Eventually we will make it so you can just one-flip click your 20 years of data into the cloud and pull it down on any of these devices – that’s the holy grail and it’ll take over a year to do that,’ he says. “But you can see that already in using the new QEM – it’s using a lot of the same user experience paradigm (the way you budget on the Mac, the way you click through the pie charts) and that makes the back-end easier.”

That’s the larger picture, and after listening to Aaron’s enthusiasm, if anyone can make it happen, it’ll be him. Let’s get back to Quicken Essentials for Mac, though.

“It’s called Quicken Essentials for Mac because it’s what we consider to be essential for most users – about 80% of users.” It’s not just what Aaron and his team think is essential; it’s what people tell them they want. “We do a lot of usability studies, that’s why Mint turned out the way it did. We applied the same to QEM. We went to people’s homes and watched them use it. The majority of them just want to know: How much do I have? How much do I owe? How much do I spend on gas and food? How many times do I go to this restaurant? How many times do I go to Starbucks? What investments do I have? Let me set a budget to control my spending.” Yeah, but what about the thing many arm-chair reviewers talk about? “Only 6% of users across all platforms use bill pay,” Aaron says. “Most people still go to their bank’s website to pay a bill.”

What about other requested features, like deeper investment tools? That’s where the future of Quicken on the Mac comes in. Intuit isn’t abandoning the Mac platform anytime soon; in fact, they’re embracing it: “For the next version of Quicken for the Mac we are planning two SKUs: Quicken Essentials and a Deluxe version which adds the deeper investment tools – history of investments, stock lots (buying shares of one stock at different times), etc.”

You may rightly point out that Quicken for Windows and even the old Quicken for Mac supported these investment tools and that Quicken for Windows supports bill pay (for the paltry 6% who actually use it), but give it time. Aaron has only been on QEM for four months now, but has already helped completely reinvent Quicken on the Mac in that short timespan (yes, it’s finally a Cocoa app). Though many may complain of the lack of investing/bill pay features, I can only liken Quicken Essentials for Mac to QuickTime X. Both apps have been rewritten from the ground up to replace clunky legacy code that would have slowed their scalability in the future. Just as QuickTime X is missing some of the features of QuickTime 7, Quicken Essentials for Mac is missing some of the features of Quicken Mac 2007 – for now. But because of the clean-sweep rewrites, these new applications are just the launching point for the programs into a better, more feature-rich future.

I’ve been playing with Quicken Essentials for Mac for a few days now (I’ll have a full review of it on February 25) and I can already tell you, I’m a convert. I abandoned Quicken for Mint, but QEM has brought me back into the fold. It’s worth it for the Cocoa rewrite alone.

What else does Intuit have in store for the Apple community? Aaron told me that after Mint releases its Android app, the team will be adding features to the next iPhone version. Some of those features include adding manual transactions – the ability to enter checks that haven’t cleared yet, and an easier way to enter cash. “Doing that on the iPhone is probably the most useful way to do it because you are usually paying cash in a cab or buying a quick coffee with it.” Another thing under consideration is an ATM locator. “We know which bank accounts you have so we can tell you which ATMs in your area are not gonna charge you a fee.”

Also expect to see an iPad app. “Yes, it’s something we’ve been looking into. Ideal implementation would be Mint’s pie chart that you can click through and dive into to see Food-Dining-McDonald’s, etc. Where you could use pinch to expand and contract.” But the iPad app won’t be available at launch and probably not before late summer at the earliest.

What about Aaron’s brainchild? I use Mint for all my US accounts, but what about my UK bank accounts? Will the rest of the globe soon be able to utilize Mint.com? “Mint is working with the Global Division at Intuit, planning how to internationalize our code base.” As Aaron points out, that’s one of the advantages of such a large company taking over a Web 2.0 startup – the startup can use the company’s resources to go further than it could have on its own. As for that large company? Well, something tells me that acquiring Mint and Aaron Patzer is the best thing that could ever have happened to Intuit – and you can take that to the bank.

General relativity states that clocks in an accelerated-reference frame run slower than stationary ones. This principle is used often in syncing clocks on Earth with those on satellites or planes, but the time difference has never been measured more accurately than five decimal places; more accurate measurements would help us better understand space-time curvature and develop a theory of quantum gravity. A group of scientists that includes Energy Secretary Steven Chu recognized that an atom in a quantum superposition simultaneously travels two paths at slightly different elevations, and therefore experience slightly different gravitational effects. This let them measure the relativistic effects out to nine decimal places using data they had apparently generated over a decade ago.

General relativity states that an object in an accelerated frame experiences time more slowly than a stationary object. This effect is also generated by gravity, which is essentially an accelerated frame—being on Earth and in Earth’s gravitational pull of 9.8 meters/second/second is the same as being in a rocket in space traveling 9.8 meters/second/second. Time passes more slowly, or dilates, in these frames, an effect known as gravitational redshift.

This tiny tool will definitely catch your eye of interest if you’re downloading a lot of files from Rapidshare, Megaupload or hotfiles: pyLoad, entirely written in Python, is a download manager available for GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and most interestingly for routers!

Its functionality is similar to JDownloader with the aim to be extrem lightweight and stable to run smooth on servers or hardware routers. As of now there are several tutorials available to install pyLoad on a Buffalo Linkstation Live or ASUS router. Once installed downloads can be added and controlled via a GUI, Terminal or web interface from wherever you are.

It supports all one-click hoster “waiting time” and CAPTCHA recognitions, enabling batch downloads without user input. One-click hoster Premium users have the added advantage of using multiple connections per downloaded file, without any waiting time. Furthermore it supports link decrypter as well as all important container formats.

pyLoad is definitely worth a look and easily replaced JDownloader on my system. The latest stable version is available for download here. If you’re a Linux user Python comes with your system from the box, Windows and Mac users should follow the install instructions from the official pyLoad wiki.

One day, I will play the bass guitar. Seriously. I will, I’m telling you. And when I do, I will definitely be supplementing my lessons with studybass.com. The website was created by a bass teacher so the information seems solid, but it’s also surprisingly rich in technology. Some lessons come with video demos, and some come with Flash-based exercises you can do (like the one in the screenshot).

The site takes a very gradual approach, and is aimed at people with no musical background whatsoever. If you do have a bit of background, you can always skip ahead. The lessons aren’t overly long, and the tone is pleasant and practical.

It does require patience — you have to sit there and actually take time to read and understand the text; it’s not some zany Flash-filled attraction. But the lessons are very clear and well laid-out, and the expectations it sets seem to be realistic — it’s not some “become a bass fiend in 10 days” thing.

A year ago, we mentioned that Sony Online Entertainment had opened up their EverQuest II database to researchers, allowing scientists from noted universities the ability to study the demographics of their server in an anonymous fashion. Slowly but surely, more studies are coming out that are using this information, and one of the newer studies takes an in-depth look at roleplayers.

While the study is over 40 pages long and packed with information, Raph Koster has broken down the big findings on his website — namely the fact that hardcore RPers only make up 5% of the player population and don’t care about playing on an RP server. RPers also commonly belong to minority groups of some sort, play less hours per week than the average player, and have a higher rate of turning in-game social connections into real-world connections.

It’s all interesting stuff, and Raph has it broken down on his site, or you can check out the full study in Word’s .doc format.

Anyone who thinks that we in the blogging, Twittering, Facebooking universe have hastened the death of the long-form magazine story as we know it needs to take a look at this Esquire profile of Roger Ebert, written by Chris Smith.

As fans of ‘At The Movies’ know, Ebert’s been off the air for almost four years, since complications from cancer surgery on his jaw left him unable to eat, drink, or speak. The pictures of Ebert that accompany the story are stark; no matter how many times I see it, the image of the withered lower half of his face is tough to see.

The article, though, is inspiring; it shows an Ebert who has been able to come to terms with how he’s currently living his life and how he navigates through it, mostly through the excellent writing on his Chicago Sun-Times blog. But the most emotionally-charged moment in the whole story was his visible anger at seeing that the video of his 1999 Gene Siskel tribute show has been pulled off his 2009 blog entry about his partner and friend’s death.

Wayne Coyne, frontman of the acclaimed rock band The Flaming Lips, recently renovated his Oklahoma compound, and the new space gives the group’s music a run for its money in terms of psychedelic flair, playful construction, and sheer imagination.

The last we saw of Coyne, he was, naturally, sitting in a bathtub on Google Street View. If you thought that was the weirdest place he bathes, wait until you see his bathroom. Its Gaudiesque drip-castle design—Coyne refers to it as the “drug damaged, artist element of [his] home”—is certainly one of the highlights of his new pad, realized by FitzSimmons Architects.

An adjoining alcove, accessed by a glittering circular passageway, scores serious bonus points for including the Giz-featured world’s most beautiful object: the Gyrofocus fireplace.

Having seen Coyne’s appropriately trippy poop cave, it’s got me wondering if other musicians’ homes reflect their sensibilities as closely. Is John Mayer’s house ordinary and forgettable on the outside but chaotically and impenetrably decorated on the inside? Does Prince’s Minneapolis home have a bunch of sex swings? Yes, yes, I’m sure it does.
Full Screen Weather is a new tool from the folks behind the Weather Underground weather forecast web site that’s ideal for anyone who has ever wanted to play at being a TV meteorologist from the comfort of their own home.

In a nutshell, the web site does away with all those charts, photos, banner ads and other things you find on the Weather Underground web site. Instead you’re presented with a map that takes up the whole browser window, courtesy of Google Maps. Just enter a location and Full Screen Weather will give you the current conditions and a brief forecast for your region.

But here’s the cool part. You can also see the temperature in a number of nearby locations. Zoom in and out of the map to see more details, or click on any temperature to see the conditions for that area.

If you happen to have a 60 inch LCD display, you can also stand in front of it and point at different areas of the screen while telling your dog what the chance of precipitation is in each of the surrounding counties.

You’ll remember the somewhat similar iFund, which even got a mention in an Apple keynote a while back, and eventually offered up millions of dollars to emerging iPhone app companies like ngmoco and others. AppFund is trying to do the same thing, though they’re starting out a bit smaller, promising $5000 to $500,000 to folks with interesting iPad ideas and the means to get them up and running.

They’re soliciting ideas right now, so if you saw the iPad on stage and came up with a brilliant way to use it, you can send them a report and see if they bite. You’ll probably need a solid business plan and/or a prototype as well, since they probably won’t give you $500,000 to develop an iPad whoopie cushion that you can sneak onto a chair and make someone sit on. Or will they?

Excuse me, I have go to compose an email…
