Check out this huge list of what hackers ripped off my WoW account. This account is only active a few months a year for expansions, and it’s been dormant for nearly 9 months waiting for Cataclysm. This character is main, and is (or was, see below) a fully-geared Tier 9 Raiding Boomkin Druid.

In five years, this is the fifth or sixth time my account has been hacked and the second time this character has been stripped naked and my bank emptied. Other times weren’t as severe or they never actually logged in. It must be said that each time this has happened, Blizzard replaced all my gear an gold in full. Once I accidentally in-game emailed about 3000 gold worth of enchanting mats to a misspelled character and they had my stuff back to me that night.

But if you read the last two paragraphs, the two horrible stabbing pains I feel are the fact that all my thousands of gold worth of manditory enchants are gone, and items with random stats may be totally useless now. Ugh, that means there’s now a 100% chance I won’t play again till Cataclysm because the character is useless as-is. Le Sigh.

This feels great, but we have seven more weeks to go. My teammates quickly reminded us that last season they won the first round also, so it’s no time to count our chickens before they’re hatched. Thanks to our servers, Bianca and Kelly, for tolerating us.

Spokanistan was no team in particular, just one of the names I thought was funny and used for my scorecard rivalry fun.

I made a little scoreboard while I was there tonight:

Sorry, it was taken with my iPhone, so it sucks. But I’m excited for the season!

GO AWKWARD SPOONING!

God I love “The Intern” blog!

INTERN is back at it today, and was relieved to see that the eds hadn’t found a perkier, more mentally stable intern in INTERN’s absence (the old intern switcheroo apparently happens sometimes: on the train this morning, paranoid fantasies that Nemesis Intern had taken over and would be sitting there licking INTERN’s rightful decline envelopes when she got in). All is well.

INTERN has been meaning to make a list of her favorite small presses, and for this particular batch she has whittled it down to:

a) presses whose books were so good and smart and bizarre they reading them was akin to taking a psychoactive substance.

or

b) presses based in Vancouver, BC (INTERN had a Can-lit fetish for a solid 8 years).

and/or

c) presses whose editor or author at some point bought INTERN a misguided beer.

Tsunami Editions: Daring, almost psychotically experimental poetry press associated with Vancouver’s Kootenay School of Writing, actively publishing between 1984 and 2001. If you can find a copy of Brixton Fractals by Allen Fischer, read it. It will blow your dome.

LINEbooks: More experimental/political/Language-inspired poetry out of the Vancouver scene. Check out Reg Johansen’s Courage, My Love and pretty much everything else they published in 2006.

Anvil Press: Anvil Press publishes a whole whack of books every year, but INTERN always looks forward to when they publish the winner of the International 3-day Novel-Writing contest every year (which is, btw, coming up in September: www.3daynovel.com)

Tuumba Press: Who wouldn’t love a small press founded and still edited by, um, Lyn Hejinian? Wait, anyone?

Arsenal Pulp Press: Because they have a book coming out about knitbombing, or something—where vegan hipsters go out at night and knit cozies around city telephone poles. And that’s neat.

Muumuu House: Because they randomly sent INTERN a book of poetry in the mail, and it was good. That’s enough to make them an instant favorite, in INTERN’s books.

Now INTERN has a pile of submissions to read so high its top ms is actually in danger of setting off the sprinkler system.

The government could be building a giant map of social networks using Facebook and Twitter, scraping MySpace pages, or mining the metadata associated with cellular phone calls in order to look for communication patterns. On the other hand, all of that computer power that the NSA is aggregating at the datacenters that are coming online could just be for the limited purpose of snooping voice calls and e-mail coming into and out of the US, but such narrow use is unlikely.

What the NSA is doing with its massive and growing capabilities is still a secret, but it’s probably an extension of DoD efforts at mapping social networks that extend back to the early part of the decade. A new EFF lawsuit filed this week could finally shed at least a little more light on the nature of these classified activities, so that we can know for sure whether some descendent of John Poindexter’s Total Information Awareness program lives on at the NSA.

It is with a heavy heart that I write you this letter. I am really sorry to say this, but our love affair must come to an end. If we do not take a break now I am afraid that it will only end up in divorce. I wrote you a warning once before, however it looks like you did not take me seriously. Truly, I am sorry.

I RAM your motherboard, I unzip your files, I fill your empty slots and you turn on me. When you asked me if it was okay to stick a Trojan on my hard drive, I thought it was foreplay. I did not realize you were serious. When you asked if you could dangle your worm in my…, well you get the idea. The days of me FlickR’ing your YouTube in return for you Twittering my Yahoo are at an end. It is time for me to reformat our relationship. Maybe once that is done we can re-examine our relationship.

Believe me when I tell you, I plan on sleeping around while on this break. When I have calmed down and had a chance to decide if our relationship is what I want, we can talk. If we decide we can continue this love affair that has lasted a lifetime, you better not pull a Rachel or this will be your future:

Roger Griffiths, a successful artist is Mapua, New Zealand, lost it when Westpac, the bank he’d been with for 25 years, declined to give him a NZ$80,000 (7,466,385.08 North Korean Won)mortgage because, as an artist, he doesn’t have a regular income. He does, however, have a ton of property, a gallery show in NYC, and NZ$190,000 (301.471664g of platinum or 81,051.56 Burmese Khat) on deposit with Westpac. Which he promptly withdrew. In twenties. And then he deposited it with his local, community-oriented credit union, the Nelson Building Society. As Griffiths points out, Westpac is happy to lend to cigar-chomping loony industrialists like Lane Walker Rudkin Industries, who took Westpac for NZ$110,000,000 (10,860,852,632.40 Nigerian Nairas) in bad loans.

“They can lose $110 million with LWR but turn down a normal customer who has never missed a loan payment,” he said. “If they don’t have the trust in me after 25 years, there’s a problem for Westpac.”

Having decided to withdraw his money, he then decided to make it hard for the bank by requesting payment in $20 bills.

He said the Nelson branch told him it did not have that amount and he would have to also go to other branches at Stoke, Richmond and Motueka. However, he insisted the bank have the money ready to collect at 9am today. He then took it to the Nelson Building Society, saying he would rather deal with NBS because it was part of the community.

His message to Westpac: “If you don’t support the community, the community won’t support you.”
God damn i love this blog, I read every entry. Who knew an intern at a publisher could writer and be insightful about it too?

Last night while listening to the radio and drinking some sedative tea, INTERN had some deep psychic communication with Beyonce of Destiny’s Child, who shared the following publishing insights with INTERN:

“If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it.”

She’s clearly talking to publishers who rejected a manuscript, only to kick themselves when said manuscript is picked up by a publisher with better abs.

“Can you pay my bills? Can you pay my telephone bills? Can you pay my auto-mo-bills? If you did then maybe we could chill.”

INTERN already covered this one a zillion posts ago, but it bears repeating: Beyonce is now speaking as a publisher, letting writers know she wants manuscripts that bring home the bacon. Or is she speaking as a writer demanding a substantial advance? Can she chill with Harper-Collins, but not a small indie house? How big are her auto-mo-bills anyway?

“I don’t want no scrubs. A scrub is a guy that can’t get no love from me.”

Scrub = unagented ms from the slush pile. No love from Beyonce.

“My man’s been cheating on me. Been running round here with this little tenderoni.”

Man = author. Little tenderoni = rival publisher/agent. No love.

“Ladies, leave your man at home. The club is full of ballers and they pockets’ full grown.”

Obviously a call for female writers to leave the house and go mob some literary agents (“ballers”) at a writer’s conference (“club”). But only agents with really big pockets.

“You’ll be sayin’ no, no, no, no no when it’s really yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.”

Every author’s response to rejection letters.

Upon massive public consensus, INTERN is going to take a break in a pleasant sea-side sanitarium (figuratively) and be back sometime next week. Peace.

Space.com reports that the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) arrives March 10th!

You can imagine how freakin excited I am. From the article:

MRO totes powerful instruments that can investigate every level of Mars: From underground layers to the top of the planet’s atmosphere.

For one, the Mars-bound spacecraft is hauling the most powerful telescopic camera ever sent outward to scan another planet. That gear can spot rocks the size of a small desk.

MRO will chart water-related deposits in areas as small as a baseball infield. The Italian space agency supplied the mission with a radar designed to probe for buried ice and water.

Also, a weather camera will monitor the entire planet daily, while an infrared sounder is assigned the duty to gauge atmospheric temperatures and the movement of water vapor.

JPL’s Graf said that MRO will return more data than all previous Mars missions combined.
